Mi Air Purifier Pro Review

We continue dwelling on the topic of a healthy lifestyle. Over the past week we have been testing out Mi Air Purifier Pro — Xiaomi's most advanced air purifier to date. In this article we will put our thoughts together sharing our experience of using the device. If you want to know if there is any noticeable difference between Pro and previous models and if this thing can be life changing at all, then read on.

Exterior

If you have never had a Xiaomi air purifier before, you should know that it demands a fair amount of space in your room. You may actually mistake it for a piece furniture. It measures 735×260×260 mm and weighs 8 kg. However, the device will not look as something revolutionary if you already have seen other MiJia devices, but it is pretty: it comes in all white matte plastic with OLED-display on the front.

How it is made

Mi Air Purifier Pro has two sections: the lower section, where the cartridge that deters dust and other heavy particles is, and the upper section, where all the electronics and the fan are. In plain language, the air is sucked through the bottom of the device and then is released through the fan at the top of the purifier.

Setup and usage

Mi Air Purifier Pro comes mostly preassembled. You only need to put the filter in, which you can do easily by taking off the side panels. Then you plug in the purifier, download the Mi Home app on your smartphone and create an account or, if you already have dealt with MiJia devices before, just log in your existing account. The app will help you synch the purifier with your smartphone, which does not take a lot of time. In the app you can change purifier operating modes, set up automatic start time and check the results of purification.

Display

The main difference between Pro and previous models is that Pro has it. The OLED-display shows the level of air pollution expressed in micrograms per cubic meter. The larger the number on the display, the dirtier the air is. All the measurements are accurate, which is much owed to a laser sensor that analyzes the particle size and concentration in real time. The color of the LED ring changes according to the air quality:

  • Green ring: 0-75 μg / m3. The air quality is good.
  • Orange ring: 75-150 mkg / m3. The air is quality moderate.
  • Red ring: 150 μg / m3 and above. The air quality is unhealthy.

The screen also depicts the ambient temperature, air humidity level, the status of Wi-Fi connection and the operating mode.

Modes of operation

Mi Air Purifier Pro has three air-cleaning modes: general mode, when the device automatically adjusts operation intensity depending on the current air quality; a night mode, when the fan operates at a low speed making a comforting hum, and a maximum operation intensity, for the times when you need to quickly clean the air. In this mode, the fan speed is very high and the noise can be pretty intrusive, emitting up to 68 decibels as MiJia reports.

Filters

The purifier is said to protect from up to 100% of wool and dust and up to 91% of formaldehyde and benzene. Not only can it determine the amount of airborne nasties in the air, but also let you know when the filter needs attention. You clean it, reinstall it or, as Xiaomi recommends, replace it once in a while. The device has three types of filters:

  • plastic mesh that traps large particles like dust, wool, hair etc;
  • HEPA filter that removes from the air 99.99% of particles larger than 0.3 μm;
  • activated carbon filter that removes odor, food smells etc.

Mi Air Purifier Pro is very suitable for those people who live near the main road, have neighbors that own a fireplace in the back yard, have pets etc. The device performs well in medium-sized rooms and is rated to clean a room up to 60 square meters without a fuss. In 1 hour it is said to clean through 500 cubic meters of air. Pretty amazing!

Bottom line

Overall, Mi Air Purifier Pro sucks... in a good sense, of course. It removes dust and allergens, reduces odor and has enough power to handle a space up to 60 square meters. We really noticed a difference in air quality.
