Battery Accessories: Chargers, Converters, Storage Boxes and Li-ion Batteries
Rechargeable batteries power flashlights, remote controls, toys, cameras, tools and electronics projects. Using the right batteries, chargers and storage keeps them safe and makes them last longer. This category covers battery chargers and converters, storage boxes and Li-ion batteries.
Li-ion batteries
Rechargeable lithium-ion cells such as 18650, 21700 and 14500 are used in flashlights, power banks, e-cigarettes and DIY battery packs. Protected cells include a circuit that prevents overcharging and overdischarging. Unprotected cells are used in battery packs with separate protection. Check capacity (mAh), maximum discharge current and whether the device requires button-top or flat-top cells.
Chargers
Smart chargers detect battery type, charge each cell independently and stop when full. Multi-bay chargers charge several batteries at once. Some chargers support both Li-ion and NiMH batteries, while others are designed for one type. Never charge batteries in a charger not designed for their chemistry.
Converters
Battery converters and adapters allow smaller batteries to fit larger battery compartments, such as AA to C or D adapters.
Storage boxes
Storage boxes protect batteries from short circuits caused by contact with keys and coins, and keep them organised. Use separate boxes for charged and discharged batteries.
Safety
- Do not use damaged, swollen or dented batteries.
- Do not mix old and new batteries or different types in one device.
- Store batteries in a cool, dry place.
- Avoid carrying loose Li-ion cells in pockets.
- Recycle old batteries at proper collection points.
Practical tips
Use a smart charger that shows battery status. Label batteries to track usage and age. Store lithium batteries at partial charge for long periods.
Correct charging and storage extend battery life and reduce the risk of accidents.
Reading capacity claims
Be cautious with very high capacity figures printed on lithium cells. A standard 18650 cell typically holds up to about 3,500 mAh; cells labelled far above this are unlikely to deliver it. Smart chargers with capacity testing show the real value.
