Universal Watch Bands: Choosing by Lug Width for Smartwatches and Classic Watches
Many smartwatches and traditional watches use standard spring bars to attach their bands. Universal bands fit any watch with the correct lug width, regardless of brand. This makes them a flexible and affordable way to change the style of Samsung, Huawei, Amazfit, Garmin, Polar, Suunto and many classic watches.
Measuring lug width
Lug width is the distance between the two lugs, the parts of the watch case where the band attaches. Measure it in millimetres with a ruler or caliper, or check the watch's specifications. Common sizes are 18, 20, 22 and 26 mm. Lug width is not the same as case diameter: a 42 mm watch may use a 20 or 22 mm band.
Typical sizes
- 18 mm: smaller watches and many women's watches.
- 20 mm: many mid-sized smartwatches, such as Galaxy Watch and Amazfit GTS.
- 22 mm: larger smartwatches such as Huawei Watch GT and Amazfit GTR, and many men's watches.
- 26 mm: large outdoor watches, such as some Garmin Fenix models.
Quick-release pins
Most universal bands come with quick-release spring bars, which have a small lever that lets you change bands without tools. Bands without quick-release pins require a spring bar tool.
Materials
- Silicone and fluoroelastomer: waterproof and comfortable for sport.
- Nylon and NATO straps: lightweight and breathable.
- Leather: classic appearance for work and formal wear.
- Stainless steel and milanese: elegant and durable; metal link bands may need sizing.
Practical tips
Check that the band's spring bars fit the holes in your watch lugs. Some watches have curved lugs that work best with bands with curved ends. For metal bands, remove links or adjust the clasp to fit your wrist. Universal bands are inexpensive, so many people buy several to match different outfits and activities.
