A cage surrounds the camera body with an aluminium frame full of mounting points, so a monitor, microphone, LED light, handle and wireless transmitter can all be attached at once without blocking the ports or battery door. Cages made for a specific camera model fit tightly and keep access to every button and the flip screen, while universal cages fit many cameras with an adjustable bottom plate. Check the camera model, the thread sizes (1/4" and 3/8") and whether the cage includes NATO rails or Arca-Swiss compatibility for quick switching between tripod and gimbal. A cage also protects the camera body from knocks on busy sets.
