Phone Car Kits: Chargers, Mounts and Wireless Charging Holders

Using a phone in the car for navigation, music and calls requires two things: a safe place to mount it and a reliable power source. Phone car kits combine both, from simple chargers for the 12 V socket to mounts with built-in wireless charging.

Car chargers

A car charger plugs into the cigarette lighter socket and charges the phone through a USB-A or USB-C port. For fast charging, check the supported protocol: USB Power Delivery for iPhone and many Android phones, Quick Charge for some Android models. Dual-port chargers let a driver and passenger charge at the same time. Look for chargers with overcurrent and overheating protection.

Car mounts

  • Air vent mounts clip onto the vent slats and are easy to install; they suit most cars with horizontal or vertical vents.
  • Dashboard mounts use an adhesive or suction base and work where vents are poorly placed.
  • Windscreen mounts use suction cups and an adjustable arm; check local rules about objects on the windscreen.
  • Magnetic mounts hold the phone with a magnet or metal plate; they are quick to attach and work best with MagSafe-compatible iPhones or magnetic cases.

Wireless charging mounts

Wireless charging holders combine a mount with a Qi charging pad, so the phone charges as soon as it is placed. Automatic clamping models open and close with a sensor. Check that your phone supports wireless charging, that the case is not too thick and that the charging coil aligns with the coil in the phone. Wireless charging in a car can slow down in hot weather because the phone protects itself from overheating.

Safety and practical tips

  • Mount the phone where it does not block your view of the road or airbag areas.
  • Set up navigation before driving; use voice commands while on the move.
  • Choose a mount that holds the phone firmly on rough roads; weak clamps cause vibration and drops.
  • Disconnect chargers from sockets that stay powered when the engine is off to avoid draining the car battery.

Many drivers combine a vent or dashboard mount with a fast car charger, which is often more cost-effective than a wireless mount when the phone does not support wireless charging.
