GoPro Batteries and Chargers: Extending Recording Time for Action Cameras
Recording high-resolution video, using stabilisation and filming in cold weather all drain GoPro batteries quickly. Most users find that one battery is not enough for a full day of filming. Spare batteries and chargers keep the camera recording longer.
Batteries
GoPro HERO models use specific battery types. HERO9 to HERO13 use a similar battery shape, while older models such as HERO5 to HERO8 use a different battery. Enduro batteries are designed to perform better in cold weather. Check your model before ordering.
Chargers
Dual and triple chargers charge several batteries at once from a USB source, which is useful after a full day of filming. Charging hubs with storage also act as protective cases for spare batteries. Car chargers and power banks recharge on the road.
Charging tips
- Use a USB-C charger with adequate output for faster charging.
- Do not leave batteries in a hot car.
- Store batteries at around 50 percent charge if not using them for a long time.
- Charge batteries fully before trips.
Cold weather
Lithium batteries lose capacity in cold conditions. Keep spare batteries warm in an inside pocket during winter sports and swap them as needed.
Battery safety
Inspect batteries for swelling or damage. Do not use or charge damaged batteries. Carry batteries in cabin luggage when flying, following airline rules.
Practical tips
- Carry at least two spare batteries for a full day.
- Use a dual charger to charge batteries overnight.
- Label batteries to rotate them evenly.
- Keep spare batteries in a protective case to prevent short circuits.
External power
For long recordings such as time-lapses, connecting the camera to a power bank via USB-C allows continuous recording beyond the battery's capacity. Some models support recording while charging, but check heat and waterproofing limitations when the battery door is open.
Spare batteries and a dual charger are often the most valuable accessories for regular GoPro users.
