3.5 mm and 2.5 mm Audio Cables: AUX Cables, Audio Adapters and Splitters

The 3.5 mm audio jack remains one of the most widely used connections for headphones, speakers, car stereos, microphones and audio equipment. 2.5 mm jacks are used in some headsets, cameras and older devices. This category covers AUX cables, audio adapters and splitters.

Understanding jack types

  • TS (two contacts): mono signals, such as instruments.
  • TRS (three contacts): stereo audio without a microphone, standard for headphones and AUX.
  • TRRS (four contacts): stereo audio plus a microphone, used in phone headsets.

Using the wrong type can result in no microphone, mono sound or no sound at all.

AUX cables

AUX cables connect phones, laptops and MP3 players to car stereos, speakers and amplifiers. Choose the correct length, and consider braided cables for durability. Right-angle connectors reduce strain in tight spaces.

Audio adapters

Adapters convert between 3.5 mm and 2.5 mm, 3.5 mm and 6.35 mm (used on professional headphones and instruments) and 3.5 mm and RCA. USB-C and Lightning adapters connect wired headphones to phones without a jack.

Splitters

Splitters allow two headphones on one device, or separate a TRRS headset jack into headphone and microphone jacks for computers with separate ports.

Practical tips

  • Check TRS versus TRRS before buying adapters for headsets.
  • Use splitters to share audio with a friend.
  • Avoid long, thin cables for microphones, which pick up noise.
  • Fully insert plugs to avoid crackling.

Troubleshooting

Crackling sound often means a worn cable or dirty jack. Clean the jack with a dry brush and try another cable before replacing devices.

The right cable or adapter often solves audio connection problems quickly and cheaply.

Cable length and quality

For headphones and speakers at home, 1 to 2 metres is usually enough. Longer unbalanced audio cables are more likely to pick up hum from power cables and lights, so route them away from mains wiring and choose shielded cables for runs of several metres.
