Retro Music Converters: Tape Converters and Turntable Converters for Digitising Old Recordings

Old cassette tapes and vinyl records hold music, family recordings and memories that are slowly degrading. Retro music converters let you play these recordings and convert them into digital files, preserving them for the future and making them playable on phones and computers.

Tape converters

Cassette converters play tapes and convert them to MP3 files, either directly to a USB drive or memory card or via a computer connection. They are used for digitising music, voice recordings, family messages and old radio shows. Some converters also work as regular cassette players with headphones.

Turntable converters

Turntables with USB output or built-in recording convert vinyl records to digital files. Some models play several speeds (33, 45 and 78 RPM) and include built-in speakers, Bluetooth and cassette or CD players.

Converting recordings

The converter records the audio in real time, so a 60-minute tape takes 60 minutes to convert. Use editing software to split tracks, remove noise and add track names. Saving in a higher bitrate preserves quality.

Caring for old media

  • Clean records with a soft brush before playing.
  • Rewind and fast-forward old tapes before playing to loosen them.
  • Replace worn styluses to avoid damaging records.
  • Store tapes and records away from heat and sunlight.

Sound quality

Converter quality varies. Basic devices are fine for voice and casual listening, while audiophile-grade digitising requires quality turntables, preamplifiers and audio interfaces. For family recordings, a simple converter is usually enough.

Practical tips

  • Digitise the most important recordings first, as tapes degrade over time.
  • Back up digital files in several places.
  • Label files clearly with names and dates.
  • Check whether the converter needs a computer or works standalone.

Digitising old recordings is a meaningful project that preserves family history and music collections.
