Galaxy Tempered Glass: Screen Protectors for Samsung Phones
Tempered glass is the most effective way to protect a phone display from scratches and to reduce the risk of cracks after a drop. Samsung Galaxy phones use a mix of flat and curved screens and different fingerprint technologies, so the right protector depends on the model.
Types of tempered glass
- Standard 2.5D glass covers the flat area of the screen and leaves a narrow border at the edges.
- Full-cover glass extends to the screen edges with a black frame for a seamless look.
- Full-glue glass is bonded across the whole surface, which reduces the risk of a halo or rainbow effect.
- UV glass uses liquid adhesive cured with a UV lamp; it is used on curved screens where normal adhesive cannot hold the edges.
- Privacy glass hides the screen from people nearby.
- Matte glass reduces fingerprints and glare.
Fingerprint sensor compatibility
Recent Galaxy S models use ultrasonic in-display fingerprint sensors, while many Galaxy A models use optical sensors under the screen. Both can be affected by thick glass or trapped air. Choose glass marked as compatible with the in-display fingerprint sensor, make sure there are no bubbles over the sensor and register your fingerprint again after installation. Phones with a side-mounted sensor in the power button are not affected.
Hardness and thickness
The 9H rating describes scratch resistance on the pencil hardness scale and is common for quality glass; it does not mean the protector is unbreakable. Thinner glass keeps the touch feel closer to the original screen, while slightly thicker glass absorbs more impact.
Installation tips
- Clean the display with an alcohol wipe and remove dust with a dust sticker.
- Align the glass with the speaker and front camera before lowering it.
- Press from the centre outwards to remove air.
- Fit the case after the glass and choose a case-friendly protector to avoid lifted edges.
A cracked protector has already done its job by absorbing the impact. Replace it promptly, because chipped glass is less effective and can cut fingers.
