HDMI Cables and Accessories: Cables, Converters, Amplifiers, Adapters, Splitters and Switches

HDMI is the standard connection for TVs, monitors, projectors, game consoles, computers and set-top boxes. Choosing the right HDMI cable or accessory ensures you get the resolution, refresh rate and features your devices support. This category covers HDMI cables, converters, amplifiers, adapters, splitters and switches.

HDMI versions and cables

HDMI 1.4 supports 4K at 30 Hz. HDMI 2.0 supports 4K at 60 Hz and HDR. HDMI 2.1 supports 4K at 120 Hz, 8K and features such as variable refresh rate for gaming. Cables are labelled by bandwidth: High Speed for HDMI 1.4, Premium High Speed for HDMI 2.0 and Ultra High Speed for HDMI 2.1.

Cable length and amplifiers

Long HDMI cables can lose signal, especially at 4K. Active cables, fibre optic HDMI cables and HDMI amplifiers (repeaters) help maintain signal over long distances.

Converters and adapters

Converters change HDMI to other formats, such as VGA, AV or DisplayPort. Adapters change connector sizes, such as Mini HDMI or Micro HDMI to standard HDMI, used with cameras and tablets.

Splitters

Splitters send one HDMI source to several displays, used in shops, classrooms and presentations. Check that the splitter supports the resolution needed and HDCP.

Switches

Switches connect several sources, such as consoles and set-top boxes, to one TV, saving HDMI ports. Automatic switches select the active source.

HDCP

HDCP is copy protection used by streaming devices and Blu-ray players. Splitters and converters must support HDCP to display protected content.

Practical tips

  • Use Ultra High Speed cables for HDMI 2.1 features.
  • Use fibre HDMI for long runs.
  • Check HDCP support for splitters.
  • Use right-angle adapters for wall-mounted TVs.

The right HDMI accessory solves most video connection problems in home entertainment and office setups.

Gaming consoles and HDMI 2.1

To use 4K at 120 Hz on consoles such as PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, the TV, the HDMI port and the cable must all support HDMI 2.1. Connect the console directly to the TV's HDMI 2.1 port rather than through an older soundbar or switch, which can limit the signal.
