Step-down transformers convert 220V or 240V mains power to 110V or 120V, which lets you use American and Japanese appliances in Europe, Asia, Africa and other regions with higher voltage. They are popular with expats, travellers and people who buy appliances from abroad, such as kitchen appliances, power tools, audio equipment and electronics. Check the power rating of your appliance and choose a transformer with more capacity, especially for appliances with motors and heating elements. Some transformers also step up from 110V to 220V. Note that transformers do not change frequency (50 Hz or 60 Hz).
