Underwater housings protect cameras and smartphones from water, sand and pressure, which makes it possible to take photos and videos while snorkelling, diving and swimming. Housings are rated for a maximum depth, such as 10 m for snorkelling or 40–60 m for scuba diving, so choose a rating that suits your activity. Housings made for a specific camera model give access to all buttons and controls, while universal phone housings work with many phones. Check that the housing is made for your exact camera or phone model and has good optical glass for clear images. Test the housing without the camera before diving, and use anti-fog inserts to prevent condensation. Rinse with fresh water after each use, especially after salt water, and check the O-ring seals before every dive. A well-maintained housing lasts for many years of underwater photography.
