Access Control Systems: Door Locks, Card Readers, Controllers and Exit Buttons

Access control systems manage who can enter a building, room or area and when. They replace or supplement keys with cards, codes, fingerprints and phones, and are used in offices, apartment buildings, hotels, gyms, schools and warehouses. This category covers door locks, card readers, access controllers, door lock switches and other components.

How access control works

A reader identifies the user, a controller decides whether to grant access, and an electric lock opens the door. Exit buttons release the door from inside. Systems can be standalone (one door) or networked (many doors with central management).

Credentials

  • RFID cards and fobs: common, convenient and inexpensive.
  • PIN codes: no card needed but codes can be shared.
  • Fingerprint and face recognition: credentials cannot be lent or lost.
  • Mobile apps and Bluetooth: phones act as keys.

Electric locks

  • Magnetic locks: strong holding force, fail-safe (unlock when power fails), common on glass doors.
  • Electric strikes: replace the strike plate, available as fail-safe or fail-secure.
  • Electric bolts: bolt into the frame for higher security.
  • Smart locks: battery-powered locks with keypads, fingerprints and app control for homes and offices.

Fail-safe and fail-secure

Fail-safe locks unlock when power is lost, which is important for fire exits. Fail-secure locks remain locked without power, used for higher security. Check fire safety regulations for your building.

Choosing components

Match the reader frequency and card type, such as 125 kHz EM or 13.56 MHz MIFARE. Check the lock type for your door, such as wood, metal or glass. Use power supplies with backup batteries.

Benefits

  • Lost cards can be deleted without changing locks.
  • Access records show who entered and when.
  • Time schedules restrict access by time.

Practical tips

Install exit buttons and emergency release for safety. Test systems after installation. Keep backup power.

Access control systems improve security and convenience compared with traditional keys.
