Camera Bags, Cases and Straps: Protecting and Carrying Your Gear

Camera bags and straps protect equipment and determine how easily you can access it. The right choice depends on how much gear you carry, where you shoot and how quickly you need to reach the camera.

Bag types

  • Backpacks: carry a camera, several lenses, a laptop and accessories, with weight spread over both shoulders; best for hiking and travel.
  • Shoulder and messenger bags: quick access for street photography and events.
  • Sling bags: rotate from back to front for quick access with one strap.
  • Soft bags and inserts: padded inserts turn any bag into a camera bag.
  • Hard protective cases: protect gear in cars, planes and harsh environments.
  • Leather bags and half cases: stylish protection for compact and retro cameras.
  • Lens bags: protect individual lenses.

Straps

Neck straps are standard and secure. Shoulder and sling straps distribute weight and let the camera hang at your side for quick access. Wrist straps suit small cameras and street photography. Quick-release strap systems allow fast changes between straps and tripods. Wider, padded straps are more comfortable with heavy cameras and lenses.

Rain covers

Rain covers protect cameras and lenses in rain, snow and dust. They are lightweight and pack small, so they are worth carrying on every outdoor shoot.

Choosing a bag

  • Check the internal dimensions for your camera and longest lens.
  • Look for adjustable dividers.
  • Choose water-resistant material for outdoor use.
  • Check whether the bag fits airline cabin size limits.
  • Look for theft-resistant features for travel.

Practical tips

Pack heavy items close to your back in backpacks. Keep lenses capped and stored vertically. Use silica gel packs to reduce humidity in bags. Avoid overloading bags, as weight leads to fatigue and leaving gear behind.

Balancing protection and access

A heavily padded backpack protects gear best but slows access. For events and street photography, a sling or shoulder bag lets you change lenses quickly.

Many photographers own two bags: a large one for travel and a small one for daily shooting.
