BNC Cables and Connectors: Coaxial Connections for CCTV and Video Equipment

BNC connectors are bayonet-locking connectors used on coaxial cables in CCTV systems, professional video equipment, test instruments and networking. They connect securely with a quarter turn and do not pull out easily. This category covers BNC cables and connectors.

Where BNC is used

  • Analogue and HD-over-coax CCTV systems, connecting cameras to DVRs.
  • Professional video equipment using SDI.
  • Test equipment such as oscilloscopes and signal generators.
  • Radio and older network equipment.

Cables

Coaxial cables, such as RG59 and RG6, carry video signals. RG59 is common in CCTV over moderate distances, while RG6 has lower loss for longer runs. Siamese cables combine coaxial cable with power wires, simplifying CCTV installation. Use 75-ohm cables for video; 50-ohm cables are used in radio and test equipment.

Connectors

BNC connectors are attached to cables by crimping, twisting or compression. Compression connectors give the most reliable and weatherproof connections. Adapters convert BNC to RCA, F-type and other connectors.

Installation tips

  • Use the correct connector for the cable type.
  • Use proper stripping and crimping tools.
  • Weatherproof outdoor connections with boots or tape.
  • Avoid sharp bends in coaxial cables.
  • Keep video cables away from power cables to reduce interference.

Troubleshooting

Poor image quality, interference lines or no signal often result from loose or poorly fitted connectors. Check and re-terminate connectors if needed.

Upgrading systems

HD-over-coax cameras (AHD, TVI, CVI) work over existing coaxial cables, allowing upgrades from analogue to HD without replacing cables. Quality connectors are important for HD signals.

Practical tips

Keep spare connectors and adapters for repairs. Label cables at both ends.

Choosing the right connector

Check the cable outer diameter and connector type (crimp, twist-on or compression) before buying, as connectors made for RG59 will not fit RG6 properly.

Quality BNC cables and connectors are essential for clear, stable video in CCTV and professional systems.
