Headset caps, stem caps and spacers keep the headset adjusted and the handlebar at the right height, and missing or damaged caps let water and dirt into the headset bearings. Spacers raise or lower the stem, which changes the riding position for comfort or performance. Custom stem caps with logos and colours add a personal touch. Check the steerer tube size (usually 1 1/8") and spacer height before ordering. Aluminium caps and spacers are light and durable. Star nuts and compression plugs hold the headset together and are needed when installing a new fork. Tighten the headset correctly to avoid play or stiffness.
