Digital Endoscopes: Inspection Cameras for Pipes, Engines, Walls and Hard-to-Reach Places

Digital endoscopes, also called borescopes or inspection cameras, put a small camera on the end of a cable so you can see inside pipes, drains, engines, walls, vehicles and machinery without dismantling them. They are used by plumbers, mechanics, electricians, builders, home inspectors and DIY users.

Types of endoscopes

  • Phone-connected endoscopes: connect via USB-C or Wi-Fi and use a smartphone as the display. Affordable and portable.
  • Handheld endoscopes with screens: have a built-in display, which is more convenient for professional use.
  • Articulating endoscopes: allow steering the camera tip to look around corners, used in engine and aviation inspections.

Key specifications

  • Probe diameter: smaller probes fit narrower openings; larger probes often have better cameras and lighting.
  • Cable length and type: semi-rigid cables hold their shape for directing the camera, while flexible cables suit pipes and drains.
  • Camera resolution: higher resolution shows more detail.
  • Lighting: adjustable LEDs at the tip light dark spaces.
  • Waterproof rating: IP67 allows use in pipes and liquids.
  • Dual lens: some models have front and side cameras for better viewing.

Common uses

  • Plumbing: inspect drains and pipes for blockages and damage.
  • Automotive: check engine cylinders, gearboxes and hidden areas without disassembly.
  • Building: look inside walls and ceilings for wiring, pests and moisture.
  • Electrical: route cables through walls.
  • Home: find lost items behind appliances.

Practical tips

Choose the probe diameter based on the smallest opening you need to inspect. Use adjustable lighting to avoid glare from reflective surfaces. Clean the probe after use in drains or engines. Record video for later analysis or to show customers.

Phone compatibility

Check that a phone-connected endoscope supports your phone's operating system and connector, and whether it requires a specific app.

An endoscope can save hours of disassembly and help diagnose problems quickly.
