DIY Electronic Components: Switches, Resistors, Diodes, Motors, Connectors and Boards

Electronic components are the building blocks of repairs, prototypes and DIY projects. This category covers switches, modules, resistors and diodes, motors and controllers, connectors and terminals, breadboards and amplifier boards and audio crossovers.

Switches

Push buttons, toggle switches, rocker switches, slide switches and micro switches control circuits. Check voltage and current ratings, especially for switching mains-powered devices.

Resistors and diodes

Resistors limit current and divide voltage; their value is shown by colour bands or printed codes. Diodes allow current in one direction, protect circuits from reverse polarity and are used in rectifiers. LEDs are a special type of diode. Assortment kits are useful for workshops and education.

Motors and controllers

DC motors, stepper motors and servos drive mechanical movement. Motor controllers regulate speed and direction. Match motor voltage and current to the controller.

Connectors and terminals

Terminal blocks, pin headers, JST connectors, DC jacks and crimp terminals make reliable connections. Using proper connectors improves reliability and makes repairs easier.

Breadboards and amplifier boards

Breadboards allow building circuits without soldering, ideal for prototyping and learning. Amplifier boards provide ready-made audio amplification for DIY speakers.

Audio crossovers

Crossovers divide audio signals between woofers and tweeters in speakers, sending low frequencies to the woofer and high frequencies to the tweeter.

Choosing components

  • Check voltage, current and power ratings.
  • Choose through-hole components for easier soldering in DIY projects.
  • Buy assortment kits for workshops.
  • Use datasheets to confirm specifications.

Practical tips

Organise components in labelled storage boxes. Test circuits on breadboards before soldering. Use a multimeter to verify component values. Handle sensitive components with anti-static precautions.

A well-organised stock of common components speeds up repairs and projects significantly.

Soldering basics

For reliable joints, use a temperature-controlled soldering iron, flux and solder suited to electronics. Heat the pad and lead together, then feed solder into the joint rather than onto the iron tip, and inspect for shiny, cone-shaped joints.
