Aquarium filters keep water clean and healthy by removing waste, debris and harmful chemicals, and they provide space for beneficial bacteria that break down toxic ammonia and nitrite. Hang-on-back filters are easy to install, internal filters sit inside the tank, canister filters suit large tanks and sponge filters are gentle for small fish and shrimp. Filter media such as sponges, carbon and ceramic rings need regular cleaning or replacement. Check the filter flow rate and tank size before ordering. Choose a filter rated for slightly more than your tank volume. Never clean filter media with tap water, as chlorine kills beneficial bacteria.
