Camera Flashes and Accessories: Speedlights, Ring Flashes, Stands and TTL Cables

A flash adds light exactly when you need it: freezing motion, filling shadows outdoors and lighting dark venues. Unlike built-in camera flashes, external flashes can be bounced, angled and used off-camera for natural, professional-looking light.

Types of flashes

  • Shoe-mount flashes (speedlights): attach to the camera's hot shoe, with tilting and swivelling heads for bouncing light off ceilings and walls.
  • Ring light flashes: circle the lens to give even, shadowless light for macro photography and close-up work.
  • Off-camera flashes: used on stands and triggered wirelessly for portraits and studio-style lighting.

TTL or manual

TTL (through-the-lens) flashes measure the light and set flash power automatically, which is useful for events and changing conditions. Manual flashes require setting the power yourself, but they are cheaper and give consistent results in controlled setups. TTL flashes are brand-specific, so check compatibility with your camera system (Canon, Nikon, Sony, Fujifilm or others).

Key features

  • Guide number: indicates flash power; higher numbers mean more reach.
  • Recycle time: how quickly the flash is ready for the next shot.
  • High-speed sync (HSS): allows flash at fast shutter speeds for outdoor portraits.
  • Wireless control: built-in radio or optical triggering for off-camera use.
  • Power: AA batteries or rechargeable lithium packs.

Accessories

Flash stands and brackets hold flashes off-camera. TTL cables connect a flash to the camera off-shoe while keeping automatic exposure. Diffusers and bounce cards soften the light.

Practical tips

  • Bounce flash off a white ceiling or wall for softer light.
  • Use off-camera flash for more dramatic, directional light.
  • Carry spare batteries, as flashes consume power quickly.
  • Use HSS for portraits in bright sunlight with wide apertures.

A single speedlight with bounce and off-camera options is one of the most versatile lighting tools a photographer can own.

When buying a third-party flash, check that the firmware can be updated, as camera manufacturers sometimes change communication protocols in newer bodies.
