GoPro Lens Accessories: Filters, Lens Covers, Adapters and Add-on Lenses
The GoPro lens determines image quality, and protecting and modifying it can improve footage significantly. Lens accessories include filters for controlling light and colour, protective lens covers, adapters and add-on lenses for different effects.
Lens filters
ND filters reduce light entering the camera, allowing slower shutter speeds in bright conditions. This creates natural motion blur that makes footage look smoother and more cinematic. CPL filters reduce reflections on water and glass and enhance blue skies. Red and magenta filters restore colours underwater, where red light is lost with depth.
Lens covers
GoPro cameras have a replaceable lens cover that protects the lens from scratches. A scratched lens cover can be replaced without replacing the camera. Spare lens covers and tempered glass lens protectors help keep the lens in top condition.
Lens adapters
Lens adapters allow attaching filters or add-on lenses to cameras where direct mounting is not possible.
Add-on lenses
Macro lenses allow close-up filming of small subjects, useful for nature and product filming. Wide-angle mods expand the field of view even further, and some add-ons support horizon levelling.
Matching the model
Filters and lens covers are model-specific. HERO9 to HERO13 use a similar lens cover design, but older models differ. Check your model before ordering.
Practical tips
- Choose ND filter strength based on light conditions: lighter filters for cloudy days, stronger for bright sun and snow.
- Use red filters only underwater in blue water, magenta in green water.
- Keep spare lens covers in your camera bag.
- Clean the lens cover before each session.
Filter strength guide
ND8 suits moderate sunlight, ND16 bright sunlight and ND32 very bright conditions such as snow and water. A set with several strengths covers most conditions.
