iPad Accessories: Cases and Screen Protectors for Every iPad Generation
An iPad is used in more ways than a phone: on a sofa for video, on a desk with a keyboard, in a classroom or with Apple Pencil for drawing. The right case and screen protector depend on how you use it, but the first step is always the same: identify the exact model.
Identify your iPad
iPad, iPad Air, iPad mini and iPad Pro have gone through many generations with different sizes, camera positions, speaker grilles and button locations. Open Settings, General, About to see the model name, or check the model number on the back. Cases with auto sleep/wake use magnets positioned for a specific generation, so a case for a similar-looking iPad may not trigger the function.
Case types
- Folio and smart covers with a fold-out stand suit watching video and typing on the screen.
- Cases with a pencil holder keep Apple Pencil attached; check whether your pencil charges magnetically on the side, as the holder must not block that area.
- Rugged and shockproof cases with thick corners and handles are popular for children and classrooms.
- Rotating cases let the iPad stand in portrait or landscape mode.
- Clear back cases are thin and show the device colour.
Screen protector types
Clear tempered glass gives the best image clarity and protects against scratches. Matte or paper-feel protectors reduce glare and add slight friction for writing and drawing with a stylus, which many artists and students prefer, at the cost of a small loss in sharpness. Privacy glass is useful when working on a train or in an office. Make sure the protector has the correct cut-out for the front camera, which on recent models sits on the long edge.
Tips for daily use
- For drawing, a matte protector combined with a case that holds the pencil is the most practical set.
- For children, choose a rugged case with a stand and raised edges around the screen.
- If you use a keyboard case, a thin protector avoids pressure marks when the cover is closed.
- Clean the screen carefully and remove all dust before applying glass to avoid bubbles.
A well-fitting case and protector keep the iPad usable for years and help it retain resale value, since scratches on the screen and dents on the aluminium body are the most common signs of wear.
