Network Adapters: USB Ethernet, Wi-Fi Adapters, Powerline Adapters and Bluetooth Dongles

Network adapters add or improve connectivity for computers and other devices. They are useful when a laptop lacks an Ethernet port, a desktop has no Wi-Fi, a built-in adapter is faulty or a Wi-Fi signal is weak in part of the home. This category covers USB network adapters, powerline network adapters and Bluetooth dongles.

USB Ethernet adapters

USB Ethernet adapters add a wired network port to laptops and tablets without one. Gigabit adapters on USB 3.0 or USB-C provide fast, stable connections for video calls, gaming and large downloads. Wired connections are more reliable than Wi-Fi in busy environments.

USB Wi-Fi adapters

USB Wi-Fi adapters add wireless networking to desktops or upgrade older laptops. Dual-band adapters support 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. Wi-Fi 6 adapters offer faster speeds with compatible routers. Adapters with external antennas improve range. Check driver support for your operating system, especially on Linux and macOS.

Powerline adapters

Powerline adapters send network signals through electrical wiring, extending the network to rooms without Ethernet cables. One adapter connects to the router and another plugs into a socket in the target room. Performance depends on wiring quality and distance, and adapters work best plugged directly into wall sockets, not extension strips. Some models include Wi-Fi access points.

Bluetooth dongles

Bluetooth dongles add Bluetooth to desktops and laptops, allowing connection to headphones, keyboards, mice and controllers. Choose newer Bluetooth versions for better range and compatibility.

Choosing an adapter

  • For stable connections: USB Ethernet adapter.
  • For desktops without Wi-Fi: USB Wi-Fi adapter with antenna.
  • For rooms far from the router: powerline adapter.
  • For wireless peripherals: Bluetooth dongle.

Practical tips

Install drivers from the manufacturer if the adapter is not recognised. Use USB 3.0 ports for fast adapters. Place Wi-Fi adapters with antennas away from metal objects.

The right adapter often solves connectivity problems without replacing the computer.
