Photographic Lighting: LED Panels, Studio Lights and Continuous Lights for Photo and Video

Lighting is the most important factor in image quality, often more than the camera itself. Photographic lighting gives control over brightness, direction, colour and softness of light, which shapes the mood of every photo and video. This category covers continuous LED panels, studio lights, video lights and lighting kits.

Types of lights

  • LED panels: flat, efficient lights with adjustable brightness and colour temperature, popular for video and photography.
  • COB LED lights: single powerful LED sources used with softboxes and modifiers for studio work.
  • Portable on-camera lights: small lights mounted on the camera for vlogging and events.
  • Tube lights: creative lighting for video and portraits, often with RGB colour effects.
  • Lighting kits: lights, stands and modifiers packaged together for beginners.

Key specifications

  • Brightness: measured in lux at a distance or watts; more power allows larger modifiers and brighter scenes.
  • Colour temperature: bi-colour lights adjust from warm (around 3200 K) to cool daylight (around 5600 K).
  • CRI and TLCI: a CRI of 95 or higher means accurate colours, especially skin tones.
  • Power options: mains power or batteries for location work.
  • Cooling: active fans can produce noise during video recording; check for silent modes.

Choosing lights by use

For vlogging and video calls, a soft LED panel or ring light in front of you gives flattering light. For product photography, two lights with softboxes provide even lighting. For portraits, a powerful COB light with a large softbox creates soft, directional light. For creative video, RGB lights add colour and atmosphere.

Modifiers

Softboxes, umbrellas and diffusers soften and spread light. The larger the modifier relative to the subject, the softer the shadows.

Practical tips

  • Match the colour temperature of all lights in a scene.
  • Use sandbags on stands for safety.
  • Use battery-powered lights for location shoots.
  • Check flicker-free performance for video.

Investing in quality lighting often improves results more than upgrading the camera.
