Routers, Modems and Switches: Building a Reliable Home or Office Network
Routers, modems and switches form the core of any network, connecting devices to each other and to the internet. This category covers wireless routers, 4G mobile Wi-Fi devices, network switches and modems.
Wireless routers
Routers connect your network to the internet and create Wi-Fi. Compare Wi-Fi standards (Wi-Fi 5, Wi-Fi 6, Wi-Fi 6E, Wi-Fi 7), dual-band or tri-band support, number of Ethernet ports, coverage and features such as parental controls and guest networks. Wi-Fi 6 routers handle many devices more efficiently. Mesh systems use several units to cover large homes.
4G and 5G mobile Wi-Fi
Mobile Wi-Fi routers use a SIM card to share mobile internet with several devices. They are used for travel, temporary sites, motorhomes, rural homes without broadband and as backup connections. Check supported network bands for your country and operator.
Switches
Switches add Ethernet ports to a network. Unmanaged switches are plug-and-play; managed switches allow VLANs and traffic control for businesses. PoE (Power over Ethernet) switches power IP cameras, access points and VoIP phones through network cables. Gigabit switches are standard, and 2.5 Gbps switches are becoming common for faster connections.
Modems
Modems connect to the internet provider's line, such as DSL, cable or fibre. Many providers supply combined modem routers. Check compatibility with your provider before buying.
Placement and coverage
Place routers centrally, raised and away from thick walls and metal objects. Avoid placing them in cabinets.
Security
- Change default passwords.
- Use WPA2 or WPA3 encryption.
- Update firmware regularly.
- Use guest networks for visitors.
Practical tips
Use Ethernet for desktops, TVs and consoles. Add a switch when the router has too few ports.
A well-planned network with a good router and switch gives fast, stable connections for all devices.
In larger homes, a router's Wi-Fi may weaken over distance; adding a mesh node or access point is usually more effective than buying a router with higher advertised speeds.
