Second-Hand iPhones: How to Choose a Used iPhone with Confidence
Used iPhones offer Apple's build quality, cameras and iOS ecosystem at a lower price than new models. iPhones also tend to hold their value and receive software updates for many years, which makes a well-chosen used iPhone a sensible purchase.
What to check
- Model and storage: newer models receive iOS updates for longer. Storage cannot be expanded, so choose enough for photos and apps.
- Cosmetic condition: check the description for scratches, dents and screen wear.
- Battery health: shown in Settings, Battery, Battery Health. A battery below about 80 percent maximum capacity is considered worn and will need replacing sooner.
- Network lock: make sure the iPhone is unlocked for your operator or works on your network.
- Activation Lock: the previous owner must have signed out of iCloud and removed Find My; otherwise the phone cannot be activated.
- Parts history: on recent models, Settings, General, About shows whether parts such as the screen, battery or camera have been replaced.
Software support
Apple supports iPhones with iOS updates for many years, but older models eventually stop receiving new versions. Check which iOS version the model supports, especially if you rely on banking or work apps that require recent iOS versions.
Choosing the right model
For basic use and a lower budget, older models with Touch ID or a smaller screen are adequate. For better cameras and battery life, choose a more recent model. Pro models offer better cameras and displays, while standard models offer good value.
After buying
Update the iPhone to the latest supported iOS version, set up Face ID or Touch ID and check that all functions work, including cameras, speakers, microphones, charging, Wi-Fi and mobile data. Fit a new case and screen protector to keep the phone in good condition and preserve its resale value.
