Signal Detectors: RF and Wi-Fi Detectors for Finding Hidden Cameras and Trackers

Signal detectors help find hidden wireless cameras, GPS trackers, listening devices and other transmitters. They are used by travellers checking hotel rooms, businesses protecting confidential meetings, vehicle owners checking for trackers and people concerned about privacy. This category covers RF signal detectors and Wi-Fi signal detectors.

How RF detectors work

RF detectors sense radio frequency signals emitted by wireless devices, such as cameras, trackers and bugs transmitting over cellular, Wi-Fi or radio. The detector alerts with sound, vibration or lights as you approach the source. Sensitivity adjustment helps pinpoint devices.

Limitations

RF detectors only find devices that are transmitting at the moment of the search. Devices that record locally or transmit only periodically may not be detected. Phones, routers and other legitimate devices also emit signals, so switch them off during searches.

Finding hidden cameras

Many detectors include lens finders with red LEDs that reflect from camera lenses, allowing you to find cameras even if they are not transmitting. Look through the viewer and scan the room slowly.

Wi-Fi detectors

Wi-Fi detectors analyse wireless networks and signal strength, helping detect unknown devices and troubleshoot Wi-Fi coverage.

How to search

  • Switch off your own wireless devices.
  • Sweep the room slowly, checking smoke detectors, chargers, clocks and decorations.
  • Use the lens finder in dark rooms.
  • Check vehicles under seats, bumpers and the OBD port for trackers.

Magnetic field detection

Some detectors include magnetic sensors that find magnetic GPS trackers attached to vehicles.

Legal considerations

Using detectors is legal in most places, but jamming signals is illegal in many countries. Detectors only identify signals, they do not block them.

Practical tips

Practise using the detector at home to understand normal signals. Use sensitivity adjustments to locate sources precisely.

Signal detectors are useful tools for protecting privacy when travelling and in business.
